Our World Tuesday – Tulsa Garden Center

The Tulsa Garden Center is housed in the former David Travis Mansion on Peoria Avenue.

Tulsa Garden Center Topaz Impressions Van Gogh I

It was built in the early 1920’s by David Travis (formerly Rabinowitz) an early day Tulsa Oilman and immigrant from Russian who in true wildcatter fashion didn’t get live in for very long and lost it  because of an oil price crash (I have to say that he wasn’t a wildcatter but he was in the oilfield supply business). It had various owners, finally ending up with another oilman who sold it to the City of Tulsa.

Tulsa Garden Center Breakfast Room Topaz Impressions Renoir I

It’s a busy place as it hosts thirty gardening groups plus countless weddings and fundraisers during the year. My wife during her Master Gardener phase worked in the library and then later taught children during weekend programs. I have been all through the mansion while helping her carry stuff here and there including the attic servants quarters where the children’s supplies were kept. Supposedly there is a ghost present and if I were ghost I would haunt this place as it is absolutely beautiful.

Mr. Travis was Jewish and the first Jewish services in Tulsa were held in the basement. Also in the basement is the mikvah in the basement right next the ballroom. If you catch a staff member or volunteer with a key in the right mood they might show you the mikvah and the attic where the female servants slept.

Tulsa Garden Center Conservatory Topaz Impressions Cezanne I

This is the back side of the Conservatory of the Garden Center. The front of the building gets all the attention but I find it rather bland. I much prefer the rear. Mainly because of the red tile roof of the building attached to it.

IMG_0448

Four years ago in that same corner, Heather and I built a Children’s Garden for the Garden Center. It doesn’t look like much but it was a lot of work. They didn’t have a place for the kids to work with soil and Heather didn’t think that it didn’t make too much sense teaching kids about gardening if they didn’t  have a place of their own to plant and tend plants.

IMG_6843

It took off and grew though!! Heather left the program and moved on to other things and so did the Garden Center and all that she put in got taken out. Which, if you know anything about gardening, is the way things go.

The Tulsa Garden Center is a great organization and a great place check it out.

Our World – 2015 Post Oak Lodge Challenge Quarter Marathon

Sunday I ran the Quarter Marathon part of the Post Oak Lodge Challenge which is a bunch of races of varying length from 10K to 50K held over two days at the beautiful Post Oak Lodge north of Tulsa. I generally run the 10K on Saturday but this year elected to run the quarter because it doesn’t change the family schedule very much.

DSCN3119

Getting close to race time everybody started assembling near the start line. Meanwhile…

DSCN3118

I was finishing up my warm-up routine inside the lodge. I’d of been really warmed up but some young whippersnappers, you know people in their 40’s, were taking my spot by the fireplace. Notice my shoes? They are Hokas, specially made for trail running. They are nice but I’m thinking about getting a kickstart campaign going for my next pair. If Heather finds out how much they cost, she might start her own non-financial kickstarter campaign. So far the shoes seem to be working pretty well. They are very cushiony. Yep, cushiony is a word here in Oklahoma. Just so you know.

DSCN3121

Off we went down the road and off into the trails. I was hanging back. Wearing my brand new Hokas on a night run on Turkey Mountain several weeks ago I tripped and fell and I think that I might have cracked a rib. I got xrays Friday but haven’t got the results back yet. Most advice that I’ve seen on the web advises against running with a cracked rib. However, most people don’t think that what I do is actually running either. So off I went. Slowly though. Notice how I make going slowly an option for me. It is an option. I can either go slowly or just stand there.

DSCN3124

The course was really hilly, up and down, and over around. I ran on the level spots and generally walked on the uphill segments. On the downhill spots I ran if there were not many rocks or roots. I didn’t want to trip and fall and then have to go to the doctor and endure their questioning about who goes running with a cracked rib. Followed by “Do you really run.”

DSCN3125

Post Oak Lodge has a zip line course. I was kind of eyeing it to see if I could cut some of the run short. I mean, I doubt the rules actually say that one can’t use the zip line. I decided not to do it. Of course several of my fellow runners didn’t allow me to use it. I wish they would just mind their own business.

DSCN3126

This being Oklahoma we passed oil wells. These might be for sale. At $40 a barrel they should be cheaper than they would have been last summer. You ready? I can probably hook you up.

DSCN3128

Off we go up another hill. Except that this is Holmes Peak. The highest point in Tulsa County. Salud!

DSCN3129

Are you up for another view of downtown Tulsa? Despite what you think Oklahoma doesn’t tilt to the left. It tilts at almost a 45 degree angle to the right. I over corrected. If you are wondering what in tarnation I am talking about then you are not familiar with Oklahoma.

DSCN3130

Here is a little more balanced view.

DSCN3131

Here is my favorite part of the race. Ken Childress (aka “Trail Zombie” ) manning an aid stop. I think that TZ, as he is known, has introduced hundreds, if not thousands, of people to trail running in northeast Oklahoma. He is a great guy. Check out his blog here.

DSCN3132

The Snake Run is a TZ event on Turkey Mountain next week. It is a little different in that everybody runs the same times as everybody else (either a three hour race or a six hour time) the winner runs the most distance. It is fun. I don’t know if I can make it or not. I ran it in 2011 and 2012. It’s about time I do it again. I really don’t know if I can run three hours truthfully.

DSCN3134

Hey, I’ll cut to the chase. I finished the race (upright, with dignity) and got my meal. The thought that struck was that this is an Okie Methodist Seder Dinner. After running six and a half miles I was not really hungry anyway, but I ate it anyway. I did have a couple malted beverages also. In addition to the one TZ gave me out on the course. I’ll do a lot for a beer. Notice the banana? Son Logan does not like bananas. In fact he won’t tolerate them in the house. He doesn’t like the texture, nor does he like how they change color. He is the banana nazi as we call him. I was in banana heaven today, both aid stations had bananas as well as the lunch served at the end.

DSCN3135

And my brand new Hokas. A little muddy, not too bad. Its got some fast zip shoe laces that come in really handy when I’m trying to take them off before I track mud into the house. Tracking mud into the house is a bad bad thing. Take my word for it.

And here is my route map generated in partnership with Garmin and my watch. Complete with heart rates and all that good stuff. So even though I don’t really run, I did get my heart rate up. Plus I didn’t fall although I did stumble once. Garmin is working on an upgrade to show beer consumption also.

So chalk up another good Post Oak Lodge Challenge. I’ve been running this event for some time and it is great to see it grow and develop every year.

Here are my posts for the event for 2014, 2013,  2011, and 2010.

So, come up to Oklahoma and run this race with me next year!

2015 Darryl Starbird National Rod & Custom Show

Saturday I dropped the kid off at his Improv group and headed over to the Tulsa Fairgrounds in order to check out the Darryl Starbird National Rod & Custom Show.  I’ve been to lots of car shows but I had never been to this. It is a show of custom and hot rod cars. They are labors of love and I don’t see how the owners will ever recover the value of the time and money they have put in their cars.

1965 Cobra

1965 Cobra Mustang. I love the fake snakes on the body of the car and in the trunk. I least I think they are fakes. I told you that I am not much of a car guy. I’m attracted to fancy paint jobs and the lines and appearance of the car.

1940 Ford

1940 Ford. I love the color and white wall tires and the chrome on the wheels, bumper, grill and headlights, and again the swoopy lines. (Swoopy is a word. I wouldn’t try it in WWF though.)

1948 Chevrolet

1948 Chevrolet, gorgeous color, and the wide whitewalls on the tires and I love the chrome bumper and simple lines.

1950 Packard

1950 Packard painted up to look like an Army staff car. Apparently Packards were popular with the generals back then for staff cars. I can see why. I love the hood over the windshield and the way the engine hood opens up.

1950 Ford?

Now, my tagging says 1950 Ford but I am uncertain about that. I just love the two toned color scheme and all the chrome and that huge grill.

1938 Chevrolet Business Coupe

1938 Chevrolet Business Coupe. Look at that tall grill and that paint job. Wonderful. I loved how they displayed this car with the cool lighting that really made it shine.

1940 Plymouth Road King

This is a 1940 Plymouth Road King. The owner is the son of the original buyer and it has been the family since it was brand new, 75 years. It has been a labor of love for him. He did all the work himself and he dedicates the car to his late wife who died of cancer.

Custom Triton

I am not sure but I think this car is a total custom car. A one of a kind. Look at the headlights. The car has a clear acrylic roof that has air conditioning vents in it. And I love the paint job. Notice the shrouds around the rear wheels. This car is wonderful.

1953 Buick Convertible

A 1953 Buick Convertible. Oh my, the red leather seats, the black and white paint job. How long and sleek it is. This is a wonderful car.

So that was just a sampling of what was there. In addition to all the super deluxe show cars there were many cars on display by other people who have nice cars and keep them in good shape and polished and detailed them for the show.

Plus they had some people there demonstrating how custom cars are built. There was non-stop music and I think they had some small races later in the day. I left because I was overwhelmed plus I had to go pick up the kid.

I’ll be back next year!!

I like cars but I am not a car guy and I don’t take very good notes. In fact I take no notes and the way I try to keep things straight is by taking photographs of the accompanying posters. Often I don’t do a very good job of it so if I misidentify something please leave a comment and set me straight.

Dierks Forest #207 Locomotive at Tulsa’s Expo Square

Expo Square Train2

On the corner of Tulsa’s fairgrounds sits an old Baldwin steam locomotive. The Dierks Forest #207. It was built in 1917 and was used by a lumber company, Dierks Forest, for hauling lumber in southeast Oklahoma and southwest Arkansas and was moved to Tulsa’s fairgrounds in 1963.

Expo Square Train

One source I found claimed some sort of supernatural presence. I don’t know about that but when I see industrial machines like this I just imagine all the work that went into it, from the engineers who designed it to the men who built it and then followed by the people who operated and maintained the engine through its life.

Expo Square Train 3

It sure makes for a nice display is what I think.

2015 Tulsa Boat Show

Saturday, I dropped the kid off at his Improv class and headed over to the Tulsa Boat Show. Logan and his mother hate the boat show so if I want to go I have to go when I can.

IMG_1049

And I found some boats. I loved this tri hull pontoon boat. Pontoon boats make for a lot of room and a smooth ride. They are not too sexy though.

IMG_1046

The dealers had their big boats there also. Yes, there are lots of these, and bigger, on Oklahoma lakes. I think the boats are bigger than the lakes just between you and me.

IMG_1057

Once I have paid the fee to get in, I have never bought anything at the boat show. Nothing, not even food (it is kind of like fair food.) Still it is fun seeing what is for sale. I would like some property where I could tool around in a four wheeler like the above.

IMG_1066

They had an amphibious car, or maybe it is an amphibious boat. A car that get in water.

IMG_1065

It has a most manly instrument panel don’t you think.

IMG_1067

A Dobbertin Hydrocar.

Here is a video from four or five years ago. Yes, it can go pretty good but never gets up on plane. It just plows through the water.

IMG_1069

And they had some Indian Motorcycles. I’ll take red please. They are beautiful.

IMG_1078

They also had some funky powered assist bicycles. They can go up to 25 miles per hear I heard a salesman tellsomebody.

IMG_1083

Weapons are extra.

IMG_1084

I’m a sucker for old woonden power boats. They are just so cool. This is an Aristo Craft, 1956 model. $16,000 bucks and it is yours.

IMG_1085

I think that would is beautiful.

IMG_1090

there are lots of trailers at the show also. They get fancier ever year. This one has a rear deck. You have to provide your own kids though. Maybe next year they will have them with kids. Stay tuned.

IMG_1091

This is more my speed. I love the color.

IMG_1089

Many trailers and RV’s now have outside kitchens, stereos, televisions. I think that would be nice.

What about you? Have you been to a boat show lately?

Shadows and Reflections

DSCN2917

It was colder than you know what today and the windy was up but I bundled up and went on a walk today. The sky was clear and I was enjoying the sun. My employer has a new plaza in front of the building and I love it. It replaced a lot of odd 1980’s planters and design features with and open concept area with shade and seating areas with interesting shadows. See the light areas above? They are supposed to look like natural gas flames like on a stove or a gas light. Yeah, I know you gotta use your imagination. Since I work for a gas company I think that it is a nice touch. Too bad they don’t have some gas fireplaces out there.

DSCN2913

I went to the north end of downtown. I like the reflections of our all glass city hall on the back of the performing arts center. It gave the the all beige concrete exterior a little “liquidy” look. Liquidy is a word in Oklahoma, just so you know.

DSCN2916

This is our brand new state of the art drunk driver proof fountain at Bartlett Square.  You know the Bartlett Square with the Circle Drive (or roundabout, my British readers may say). It is all so confusing to me. It must be confusing to drunk drivers also because our two previous conventional fountains got totalled by the drunks ramming into them at night. This new one has a low profile so they can drive right over it plus it has flashing lights. We cater to our drunks here in Oklahoma.

You can see how cold it is. At high noon there is still a lot of ice around the fountain.

Simon Property Group Formally Announces New Outlet Mall on Tulsa’s Turkey Mountain

What many of us feared might happen has inched a little closer this week. Real estate giant Simon Property Group formally revealed plans to build a 400,000 square feet outlet mall on Tulsa’s Turkey Mountain. They have a few more hurdles to jump over but it looks like it is going to happen.

DSCN1345

I cannot imagine a worse place for an outlet mall. Turkey Mountain is an urban wilderness used by thousands of Tulsans for hiking, biking, running, and just a generally getting away from it all.

A family of hikers on Tulsa's Turkey Mountain

It is huge, huge enough that by the time you get a half mile away from the parking lot you are pretty much on your own. It is hard to find solitude like that in a city.

DSCN2728

The basic problem is that only about a third of the mountain (very very roughly speaking), the eastern third closest to the Arkansas River is public land. The next third to the west is owned by the George Kaiser Family Foundation who have announced that they are not selling their land for development. The western third is private property. It is unfenced and unposted and all sorts of people, including me use it like we do the rest of the mountain. We really cannot expect private landowners to provide us free public parks. The city or some other public entity needs to step up and buy the various properties. Where is the money to come from? I don’t know.

DSCN1320

On the other hand Simon Property Group is expecting the city to step up and provide free  enhanced road access and other infrastructure. I am totally against that. Why is that we are totally against welfare to poor people but trip all over ourselves to give money to companies worth billions of dollars?

R1-08992-0008

So I’ve already emailed by brand new city councilor telling her my feelings on the issue and asking what her position is. If you are a Tulsa citizen then contact your councilor and let them know how you feel about this mall. In fact email Simon Property Group and politely let them know also.

HipstaPrint

The dirty little secret about shopping malls is that they are declining. Tulsa has several shopping malls that are in severe decline. Maybe Simon could rebuild an out mall in such a location and leave a wilderness alone.

DSCN2724

One thing for sure is that if we don’t do anything we’ll lose a big chunk of Turkey Mountain.

R1-08992-0015

I don’t know about you.

26_24

But that is unacceptable to me. If it is built I’ll still have a place to live.

DSCN2222

Not everybody is that fortunate.

Our World Tuesday – Philbrook’s Festival of the Trees

IMG_20141123_163053

The family loaded up and went to Philbrook Museum of Art‘s annual Festival of the Trees. It’s a don’t miss event for me. It is a fund raiser where artists and organizations build Christmas trees and rich people buy them!!! The museum patrons get to see the them before the rich guys take them home.

IMG_0582

One of my favorite trees was a Route 66 tree with a symbolic route 66 as a garland.

IMG_0583

It had a all sorts of route 66 doodads on the tree. I liked this map segment. I used to work for Standard Oil Company. Which got bought by British Petroleum who spun my assets off to Tex/Con Oil and Gas which was bought by a part of Public Service Company of Oklahoma who then sold them to Shell Oil Company. Dang!! I’m off topic. I love those old maps though.

IMG_0592

My other favorite tree was dedicated to the men and women who serve in our armed force and how much it means to them to be able to get home for Christmas.

IMG_0593

That tugs on my heart strings because I have family members who have spent time away from their loved ones while serving our country. I’ll bet most of the people who read this post will also. Regardless of what country.

IMG_0594

As far as I am concerned, the best way that the most people make it home for Christmas is by making sure we, as a country, don’t do anything stupid.

IMG_0598

There was another tree with a similar but different theme. It was dedicated to the people in the armed services.

IMG_0601

It had all the services on the tree but I liked the Navy stuff.

IMG_0600

So is that a Barbie doll or what on top?

IMG_0609

The event also has gingerbread houses. Many of them by Girl Scouts. I’m a big believer in scouting. I liked this camping theme.

IMG_0610

Heather, the official by goodness Oklahoma State University certified Master Gardener liked this gardening theme and so did I.

IMG_0611

I liked this thin mint walkway, along with more camping theme. Plus I like the thin mints. Did I mention that I like thin mints. So when do Girl Scout cookie sales start, March?? I don’t know if I can last that long.

IMG_0616

I hope that you don’t mind. But of all the trees, gingerbread houses, and other works of art presented at the Festival of the Trees, this was my absolute favorite.

IMG_0619

And here we are. My youthful wife, and my great son. I look more and more like the wizened old man all the time. At least when I stick my chin out to minimize my my chins. When I don’t I look more like Jabba the Hut!!

Anyway, so much for that. What have you done lately??

Snow Run on Turkey Mountain

DSCN2723

Saturday, with a forecast of snow on Sunday, Brian of Tulsa’s Runners World, and one of the leaders of Tulsa’s active running community, put out a call on Facebook for a Snow Run on Sunday on Turkey Mountain followed by a lunch somewhere. There was a huge response. So a bunch of people of all ages and abilities showed up. I had never run in the snow before  on Turkey Mountain so I hey I put aside my concerns about bad streets and all that showed up myself. We had Trail Zombie, the mayor of Turkey Mountain as our guide. He did a great job. Check the link for his post on the run.

DSCN2728

It was just a dusting of snow but it was beautiful.

DSCN2733

The trails were beautiful. I actually ran in my hiking boots cuz I like my feet to stay warm and I didn’t know how wet it would be. The running in the boots went fine. They are well broken in.

Turkey Mountain Pond

It was beautiful. Oh, I already said that? Well it bears repeating.

Snow Run on Turkey Mountain cropped

Everybody kind of shuffled along the Snake trail for 3.5 miles. Nobody was in a big hurry. We waited at the trail forks for the stragglers to come in and off we went again.

DSCN2737

Afterward some of went to Cracker Barrel to eat and enjoyed some great company and conversation.

DSCN2739

Afterward I went home. LJ the cat was not interested in my Snow Run. A belly rub was more what he was looking for.

This was our route. 3.5 miles the scenic way.

Our World – Sunday Afternoon on Turkey Mountain

DSCN2666

Cold weather is coming but Sunday is warm. I put the Cowboys vs Jaguars game on DVR and we loaded up and drove to Turkey Mountain for a little outing on the Lollipop and Zoi trails.

DSCN2678

The sun was out and the temperature was warm.

DSCN2672

We saw a lot of stuff. We saw too washing machines out in the middle of nowhere. No driers though. Contact Baltimore appliance repairs to fix any kind of appliances.

DSCN2679

We found this old bed frame in the middle of nowhere. Maybe a homeless guy was going to put in a flower bed? Logan didn’t see the humor in that.

DSCN2683

We found these strange little berries. Heather thought they might be persimmons. I don’t know. What do you think?

Heather and Logan found them selves an #oilwell on #turkeymountain #tulsa #oklahoma #igersok

Heather and Logan found an oil well and announced they were rich! I asked what about me? And they said “What about you?” What about you? Have you ever been left out of an oil deal? I know what you feel like.

DSCN2669

The woods were beautiful Sunday. It was like a cathedral.

DSCN2685

This is my favorite pic from Sunday. It looks like the woods are creeping up behind him and are going to swallow my only son. Of course his shirt doesn’t help.

Have you been on a good walk lately?
